【Substance Alert】Oxethazaine
2010-12-13

Athletes are warned against the potential risk of inadvertent doping for using medications containing Oxethazaine.

Oxethazaine is a topical anesthetic which is commonly found in medications for treating stomach pain. A recent study shows that consumption of Oxethazaine could lead to the presence of mephentermine and phentermine in the urine sample.

Mephentermine and phentermine are both being classified as non-specified stimulants (S6) by WADA and are prohibited in-competition. Therefore, the use of medications containing Oxethazaine immediately prior to or during competition could result in sanction for return of positive test.

According to the principle of strict liability, an athlete is responsible for the presence of any prohibited substance in his/her body no matter the use is intentional or unintentional.
